Zolani Tete, former world boxing champion, was killed by shooting in South Africa

Zolani 'Last Born' Tete, former world boxing champion, was killed on Friday in a shooting outside his home in the Eastern Cape province of South Africa. At the age of 38, Tete was attacked by two armed men who emerged from a vehicle and opened fire as he was arriving home in the township of Mdantsane.

The South African Minister of Sports, Gayton McKenzie, stated that he would not speculate on the motives of the crime. Tete's assassination once again draws attention to the high crime rate in the country, which remains one of the highest in the world, despite the recent decline in homicides. A 27-year-old woman who was traveling with Tete was seriously injured and was taken to the hospital. Tete won the IBF junior-bantamweight world title in 2014 and is internationally known for his 11-second knockout of Siboniso Gonya in 2017, the fastest stoppage in a world title fight. The police have launched an investigation, but the motives for the attack remain unclear.
