FIFA and UEFA reviewed Cristiano Ronaldo’s achievements after the 41-year-old forward announced on Thursday his permanent retirement from the Portugal national team, ending 23 years representing the side.
FIFA emphasized that Ronaldo is the only player to have scored at six different editions of the World Cup. His 234 caps and 146 goals for Portugal are world records in men’s football.
UEFA highlighted the three trophies the footballer won with the national team: the 2016 European Championship and the 2019 and 2025 editions of the Nations League.
The Portuguese Football Federation expressed its “deep gratitude” to Ronaldo and announced that it intends to organize a tribute to his career. The governing body described him as an inspirational leader and a symbol of the national team.
Ronaldo announced his retirement in a video posted on Instagram, saying that the time had come to return the number 7 shirt he had worn for 23 years. The announcement came three weeks after he was suspended and fined by the Portuguese federation.
