Cristiano Ronaldo faces a suspension of between one and six months and a fine of up to €1,000 after leaving the Portugal national team’s training camp without justification during the Nations League campaign. The footballer departed before the match against Denmark, and the case is set to be reviewed under the regulations of the Portuguese Football Federation.
The regulations stipulate that called-up players who abandon or fail to attend training sessions, matches or other national-team activities without a valid reason may be suspended for between one and six months. In the case of a professional footballer, a fine of between 5 and 10 accounting units may also be imposed, equivalent to approximately €500–€1,000. The absence or abandonment also triggers an automatic preventive suspension.
The situation prompted Portugal’s football leadership to intervene quickly. FPF president Pedro Proença and head coach Jorge Jesus reportedly travelled to the airport to try to convince Ronaldo to remain with the team. The forward’s private jet, which was in Madrid, arrived in Copenhagen at around 22:15 and returned to Madrid approximately one hour later.
