Cristiano Ronaldo risks a suspension of up to three months and a fine after leaving the Portugal national team’s training camp on September 30, following a conflict with head coach Jorge Jesus. The Portuguese Football Federation has opened disciplinary proceedings, and the striker is provisionally suspended until the case is resolved.
The FPF regulations provide, for leaving the squad, a suspension of between one and six months and a fine of at least 510 euros. In Ronaldo’s case, the maximum sanction could be reduced to three months because the footballer admitted his mistake and apologized. The period of preventive suspension, which began on September 30, will be deducted from the final punishment.
Ronaldo said on October 6 that he is aware that his status as captain represents an aggravating circumstance and that his actions must have consequences. If he receives the minimum punishment, he could return to the field for Portugal’s matches in November.
The conflict with Jorge Jesus reportedly began after Portugal’s 1–2 defeat to Norway, played in Oslo on September 27. Ronaldo claimed that the head coach asked him to warm up for approximately 30 minutes without putting him on the field.
