Former world number three tennis player Elina Svitolina was the victim of online attacks after losing to Naomi Osaka at the Canadian Open. She denounced the "shameful" behavior of punters who sent her threatening messages, including death threats. Svitolina stressed that she is a mother before she is a sportswoman and criticized the way women are treated online. Studies show that almost half of the abuse directed at players comes from angry punters, and other female players have highlighted the negative impact such abuse has on athletes' emotional health.
