Elena Rybakina, a Kazakh player and the world number two, defeated the Romanian Gabriela Ruse, ranked 71st in the WTA, in the second round of the 1,000-point tournament in Madrid. Ruse started well, winning the first set 6-4, but Rybakina came back, winning the next two sets 6-3 and 7-5. The decisive moment was marked by a crucial break made by Rybakina at 5-5, followed by a solid serve that brought her victory after about two and a half hours of play.

Gabriela Ruse's elimination occurred after Sorana Cîrstea managed to qualify for the third round, defeating Tyra Caterina Grant. In the third round, Rybakina will face Qinwen Zheng.
