David Popovici, the Romanian swimmer who won gold in the 100 and 200 meters freestyle at the European Championships in Paris, has urged the authorities to urgently resolve the financial arrears owed to athletes who have achieved international performances. Upon returning to the country, Popovici emphasized that the total amount owed by the Romanian state to athletes amounts to nearly 200 million lei.
“I believe it is a responsibility that must be taken seriously by the Romanian state, to reward athletes who bring performance to Romania,” said David Popovici.
He mentioned that he is not speaking only on his own behalf but also on behalf of other athletes who are facing financial difficulties. Popovici highlighted the state's responsibility to support athletes who contribute to Romania's image internationally.
Popovici emphasized the importance of financial awards and called for a serious discussion about sports infrastructure, which is essential for future generations of athletes.
