CSM Bucharest suffered its first defeat of the current Women’s Handball Champions League campaign, losing 35-32 away to Borussia Dortmund after leading 22-13 at the start of the second half. The match was played in Germany on Saturday.
The “Tigresses” made an excellent start and went into halftime with a seven-goal lead, 20-13. CSM continued to dominate and held a maximum nine-goal advantage, but the hosts staged a spectacular comeback in the second half.
Borussia Dortmund gradually reduced the deficit and took the lead for the first time in the 47th minute, at 26-25. The German side managed the closing stages better and won 35-32, earning its first two points of the season in the competition.
Following the result, CSM Bucharest remained on four points after three rounds and was overtaken by Ferencvaros, who have six points. The Bucharest side had begun its European campaign with victories over Krim Ljubljana, 37-29, and Buducnost, 36-26.
CSM Bucharest aims to reach the Final Four again after finishing third in the competition last season. Ferencvaros, Esbjerg and Brest also play in Group A. In another match scheduled for the weekend, Gloria Bistrita was due to face Odense.
