Italians Flavio Cobolli and Matteo Berrettini were eliminated from the Shanghai Masters 1000 tournament after losing their opening-round matches. The results affect Cobolli’s bid to qualify for the ATP Finals in Turin.
Cobolli, ranked No. 7 in the world and a finalist at Roland Garros this year, was defeated by France’s Adrian Mannarino, ranked 83rd in the ATP rankings, 6-1, 4-6, 6-3. It was the Italian’s fourth consecutive defeat, and the elimination complicates his path to the competition in Turin, although he still maintains a significant lead in the qualifying standings.
Matteo Berrettini lost to American Brandon Nakashima, 7-6, 7-5. At the end of the match, the Italian smashed his racket, visibly affected by the result.
The tournament’s top seed, Germany’s Alexander Zverev, defeated China’s Wu Yibing and advanced to the third round. World No. 1 Jannik Sinner is not taking part in Shanghai because of a knee injury. The Italian has not played since July, when he won the Wimbledon tournament.
