Prime Minister of Moldova Vasile Tofan said during a working visit to the United States that the country can become a regional export and trade hub, thanks to its location and access to European Union markets. He made the statement on Fox News Podcasts.
Tofan emphasized that, with a population of fewer than three million and a small domestic market, Moldova must focus on creating a favorable business environment and attracting American investment. These could contribute to Ukraine’s reconstruction and the development of trade with the EU. The government in Chișinău intends to sign the Treaty of Accession to the European Union in 2028.
The prime minister also spoke about the war in Ukraine and the risks of destabilization posed by Russia, calling for a just peace. He thanked the United States for its support for regional security, including the construction of a 400-kilovolt power line linking Moldova and Romania that could enable energy exports to Ukraine.
Tofan said that NATO membership is not on the country’s agenda, with Moldova set to retain its neutral status. His visit to New York takes place from September 23 to 26, as part of the 81st session of the UN General Assembly. During the visit, the prime minister is holding meetings with political leaders, businesspeople and Moldovan citizens in the United States, and is due to deliver a speech to the UN plenary.
