The authorities in the Republic of Moldova have reported pollution with petroleum products in the Dniester River, which occurred after a Russian attack on infrastructure in Ukraine.
Laboratory analyses showed a 2.5 times exceedance of the permitted concentration of petroleum products in the area of the village of Nahoreni. Due to the risk to water supply and the surrounding environment, Chișinău requested the activation of the European Union's Civil Protection Mechanism to receive international support.
At the same time, Romania intervened to assist the Moldovan authorities. The General Inspectorate for Emergency Situations (IGSU) sent special equipment, materials to limit pollution, and a team of specialists to help monitor the water and install protective barriers.
The purpose of the intervention is to limit the spread of pollutants and protect the affected population and ecosystems along the river course.
