A Moldovan driver, who was driving a vehicle registered in Lithuania, was involved in a case of evasion on a highway in Italy, where he passed through toll stations 18 times without paying. The incident occurred in September of last year, but it was recently brought to public attention when the case was tried at the Court in Pesaro. The total damage caused to the Autostrade company was estimated at 14,000 euros.
The driver used an ingenious method, taking advantage of the lanes designated for the Telepass system, synchronizing with another vehicle equipped with the electronic device to pass without payment. Although he was accused of aggravated evasion, the public defender argued that there was not enough evidence to prove that the man was behind the wheel during all the contested passes, due to the lack of surveillance cameras. Following these arguments, the judge decided to acquit him of all charges.
