The President of the Republic of Moldova, Maia Sandu, stated that integration into the European Union is vital for the country's security and the survival of democracy, but she also spoke about the option of unification with Romania as a possible alternative plan for faster EU accession.
Sandu highlighted, in an interview with RFI and Deutsche Welle, the difficulties faced by small countries in the region due to Russian aggression and emphasized that European integration is a necessity, stressing that for Moldova it is "the strategy to survive as a democracy".
"In Moldova, there are more and more people who support integration into the EU today. We also have people who support unification with Romania. We are now working hard for Moldova to become part of the EU and we hope that this scenario will work. If this does not work for one reason or another, of course we will consider other options. The main objective is to maintain peace in Moldova and to keep Moldova part of the free world," said Maia Sandu.
She expressed confidence that Moldova will join the EU by 2030, mentioning that the necessary reforms are being implemented to obtain full membership status.
