Liberal MEP Siegfried Mureșan accuses the PSD of trying to manipulate public opinion by asking Finance Minister Alexandru Nazare to present Romania’s “real economic situation.” Mureșan argues that the move is intended to justify political failures and promises of salary and pension increases or a VAT reduction.
The statement was made on Wednesday in a Facebook post, after PSD leader Sorin Grindeanu asked the Finance Minister on Tuesday for a complete assessment of the consolidated budget. Grindeanu justified the request by saying there was a need to establish what measures for 2027 could be based on.
Siegfried Mureșan questioned the PSD’s position, given that Alexandru Nazare held the same position in the Bolojan Government and was retained in the executive. The MEP asked why the Social Democrats would have reappointed him if they claim that the minister had not previously presented the real state of the economy.
In Mureșan’s view, the PSD knows the economic problems, the effects of the Ciolacu government, and the need to reduce waste, but is trying to avoid taking responsibility. He argued that Romania needs sustainable economic growth, not populist promises. In the statement cited, Grindeanu did not provide a direct response to the accusations.
