President Nicușor Dan announced on Tuesday that Romania, together with 15 other countries from the south and east of the European Union, will request an increase in allocations for agriculture and cohesion funds in the upcoming multiannual budget of the EU, which is currently being negotiated.
This request comes against the backdrop of the intentions of major contributing states, such as Germany and France, to redirect funds from cohesion projects towards digitalization and defense. Romania has initiated a Joint Declaration of the Friends of Cohesion group, which includes countries such as Bulgaria, Poland, and Italy, emphasizing the importance of continuing to finance fundamental policies for the European project. Nicușor Dan highlighted that European funds are essential for the modernization and development of Romania, calling for an ambitious budget that addresses current challenges related to security and economic competitiveness.
The declaration will be presented at the meeting of ministers for European affairs, during the discussions at the next European Council.
