Prime Minister Luca Niculescu announced Tuesday evening, after the first meeting of the new Government, that he would discuss with the energy minister and other officials the measures needed for the energy sector, amid high prices and the approaching cold season.
The head of government said the energy issue is a major one both for Romania and internationally. He said the talks would cover all components of the sector, from fuels and natural gas to electricity, with the aim of identifying solutions for different categories of consumers.
Niculescu warned that the arrival of winter could heighten risks for the population and the economy if authorities fail to act in time. The prime minister also announced that the Government is considering maintaining the cap on commercial markups for gasoline and diesel, as well as reducing the excise duty on fuels.
The decisions will be made after analyzing data on price developments in international markets and their impact on consumers. The prime minister said he would be able to provide concrete details in the coming days, after meetings with the energy minister and an assessment of the available figures.
