The law adopted by parliament on 11 June provides for severe penalties for initiating or supporting fascist, legionary, racist or xenophobic organizations, including the distribution of such material. The opposition, represented by 70 MEPs, argues that the law restricts freedom of expression and contravenes democratic values. They accuse the lack of clear criteria for defining banned material and call on the president not to promulgate the law, calling it a threat to fundamental rights.
