Nicușor Dan, statements at Cotroceni, at 5:00 p.m., after consultations on appointing the prime minister

President Nicușor Dan will make press statements on Thursday, at 17:00, at Cotroceni Palace, following consultations with the parliamentary parties and formations to designate the candidate for the position of prime minister. The consultations began at 09:00 and represent a new stage in the attempt to form a government with a full mandate.

PSD, AUR, PNL, USR, UDMR, the Group of National Minorities, SOS România, POT, United for Romania, PACE – First Romania, and unaffiliated parliamentarians were invited to the discussions. SOS România announced that it would not participate because the formation’s president, Diana Șoșoacă, is in Strasbourg.

Romania has had an interim government for four months, after the government led by Ilie Bolojan was dismissed by Parliament on May 5, 2026, through a motion of no confidence. Subsequently, the president made two nominations for prime minister. Eugen Tomac resigned his mandate, while the government proposed by Liberal Adrian Veștea was rejected by Parliament on June 22, including as a result of the lack of support from some PNL parliamentarians.

Thursday’s consultations were preceded by several formal and informal discussions between the head of state and the parliamentary parties. The statements at Cotroceni are expected to clarify the next steps in the process of designating the prime minister.
