Nicușor Dan: 2026, a decisive year for the electronic ID and digital wallet of Romanians

President Nicușor Dan stated that the year 2026 is essential for completing the electronic identity card ecosystem and digital wallets for Romanians, including those in the diaspora.

During a meeting with Deputy Prime Minister Oana Gheorghiu in Brussels, Nicușor Dan emphasized the importance of digitizing public services, which should be accessible and modern, without the need for trips to the counter. Citizens with electronic ID cards have reported difficulties in updating their home address, and DGEP has acknowledged that changes can only be made at the central office in Bucharest. Nearly 1.4 million Romanians have obtained electronic ID cards, and the Romanian state will cover the costs until June 30, 2026, from European funds. Nicușor Dan also discussed the need for reforming state-owned companies, considering it indispensable for a strong state.
