Nicușor Dan, meeting with the Prime Minister of Lebanon / Discussions about the situation in the region, Romania’s support for Lebanon’s stability, and cooperation within the Francophonie

President Nicușor Dan held a meeting in New York with Lebanon’s Prime Minister, Nawaf Salam, during which bilateral relations, the regional situation, and cooperation within the Francophonie were discussed. The head of state described the talks as “substantial” and announced the meeting in a message posted on Facebook.

Nicușor Dan stated that Romania reaffirms its support for Lebanon’s sovereignty, stability, and resilience. The two officials also discussed deepening dialogue and cooperation between Bucharest and Beirut, as well as the role of the two countries within the International Organisation of La Francophonie.

A separate topic was Dacian Cioloș’s candidacy for the position of Secretary-General of the Francophonie. The President of Romania welcomed the openness of the Lebanese authorities toward this candidacy and the recent dialogue with Cioloș in Beirut.

Nicușor Dan’s wording does not indicate that Lebanon has officially announced its support for the Romanian candidate. At the end of the message, the president stated that Romania wishes to continue developing a strong, forward-looking partnership with Lebanon.
