Government discusses tax measures that could raise 40 billion lei, including VAT hikes and higher taxes

The package of fiscal measures under negotiation at the Cotroceni aims to significantly increase taxes and eliminate some tax breaks, with the aim of bringing more than 40 billion lei to the state budget. They are discussing raising VAT from 19% to 21% or 22%, including on basic products. The corporate tax could also rise from 16% to 19% and the tax on dividends to 16%. The measures could also include tougher taxation of pensions and the abolition of some facilities for copyright contracts. Public sector spending cuts are also planned.
