After receiving a favorable endorsement from the Parliament’s specialist committees, proposed Finance Minister Alexandru Nazare said that the Government is not considering introducing new taxes or increasing VAT in 2027. However, he noted that Romania needs resources for next year’s budget adjustment, estimated at no more than 1% of GDP.
Nazare said that the Ministry of Finance will incorporate proposals from all parties in order to prepare a credible budget. According to him, fiscal measures must be established before the budget is adopted, as Romania is currently under the excessive deficit procedure and expects to exit it only in 2029–2030.
Regarding pensions, the proposed minister said that a prudent indexation could be considered starting January 1, without providing a percentage. He warned that Romania must undergo further assessments by rating agencies in January and February, after avoiding the suspension of European funds and significant sanctions.
