Prime Minister Luca Niculescu stated Thursday evening on Antena 3 that the state must reduce its own spending before considering new taxes and duties for citizens. He cited the difficult past two years, marked by rising prices, VAT increases, and other fiscal measures.
“Romanians have been through two difficult years, during which prices have risen, after two years in which there were VAT increases and other taxes; I think it is difficult to come up with more measures of this kind. The first thing the state must do is tighten its own belt, collect more, combat large-scale tax evasion, and only afterward consider other taxes and duties for citizens,” Luca Niculescu stated.
The prime minister announced that, immediately after November 15, the Government would have a clearer picture of Romania’s financial, fiscal, budgetary, and economic situation. He asked the Ministry of Finance for a detailed report and noted that the Executive had already carried out a first budget rectification, with another one to be adopted.
Niculescu said that the main mission through the end of the year was to draft a credible budget for 2027. The document should be balanced, comply with the commitments undertaken in relation to the European Commission, and at the same time respond to the population’s needs.
The prime minister stressed that the state must reduce its own costs, improve its collection rate, and combat large-scale tax evasion. Only afterward could any potential new fiscal measures be analyzed, but Niculescu stated that the Government did not want to resort to such solutions.
