The government proposed by Siegfried Mureșan has little chance of winning Parliament’s vote of confidence on Wednesday, and a potential failure would bring the political crisis back to Cotroceni. The Cabinet needs 233 votes to be invested, but the designated prime minister currently relies on the support of approximately 170 lawmakers.
The proposed ministers were questioned on Monday and Tuesday in parliamentary committees, where a large number received unfavorable endorsements. The result indicates the difficulties Mureșan has encountered in trying to form a majority.
According to political sources cited by Antena 3 CNN, President Nicușor Dan does not intend to dissolve Parliament and call early elections if the government is rejected. The head of state is expected to resume consultations with the parties and designate a new candidate for the position of prime minister.
The Constitution allows the president to make a new nomination after consultations. Dissolving Parliament and calling early elections is an option, not an obligation, after the successive rejection of two prime ministerial proposals and the expiration of the constitutional deadline. Nicușor Dan has stated that early elections would prolong political and financial instability.
