The former chief prosecutor of DNA, Laura Codruța Kovesi, reacted to the statements of President Nicușor Dan, who suggested that under her leadership there were abuses at the General Prosecutor's Office and DNA. Kovesi stated that the president had no basis for these claims, emphasizing that they affect not only her personally but the entire institution as well.
Kovesi attacked Nicușor Dan in an interview, arguing that "the fact that you achieved a good score at international mathematics olympiads does not qualify you to make such statements. And certainly, the position of President of Romania is a difficult, stressful, exhausting position. I wish the president a lot of sleep, a good sleep. The country needs him to return in good shape."
Kovesi also brought up the difficulties faced by prosecutors in applying for leadership positions, due to Dan's statements about negotiations for appointments. She emphasized that some colleagues did not apply because of the perception that the appointments were already predetermined. Kovesi expressed confidence in collaborating with the new chief prosecutor but highlighted procedural issues that discouraged candidates.
