Prime Minister Ilie Bolojan states that the Eurostat data, according to which Romania's total deficit, "calculated according to European methodology and which includes all state expenditures and obligations," has decreased from 9.3% in 2024 to 7.9% in 2025, shows that the direction is a correct one.

"Romania's total deficit, calculated according to European methodology and which includes all state expenditures and obligations, has decreased from 9.3% in 2024 to 7.9% in 2025, according to data published by Eurostat. This significant decrease came from measures taken in the second half of last year to reduce expenditures and increase revenues, but also from the use of European funds and the adjustment of investments from the PNRR.

Reducing the deficit is not an end in itself, but a necessary step to put the country's finances on a healthy basis. For many years, Romania has spent more than it could afford, and the debt has steadily increased. This year, just the interest on past loans amounts to approximately 60 billion lei, equivalent to the cost of a highway like the Moldova Highway. This model could not continue. Now we are starting to change this direction and regain control over the economy.

Every percentage point reduced from the deficit, meaning approximately 20 billion lei, means less money paid in interest and more money for development, infrastructure, and public services. The faster the correction, the sooner healthy economic growth can begin, and this will be reflected in the standard of living. At the same time, borrowing costs for Romania may decrease.

It is a difficult period, in which the effort is shared at the level of the entire society. I thank everyone for their patience and sacrifice. Eurostat data shows that the direction is a correct one. The economy is stabilizing without putting pressure on the future generations. It would be a shame to return to where we started," Ilie Bolojan stated on Wednesday evening in a Facebook post.
