Sorin Grindeanu requests an official position from Fitch following an analyst’s warning about the risk of Romania being downgraded to “junk”

PSD President Sorin Grindeanu announced on Friday that the party will ask the Fitch agency for an official position on the risk that Romania could be downgraded to “junk” status, not recommended for investment, amid the prolonged political crisis.

Grindeanu made the statement after a Fitch analyst said in an interview with Bloomberg that political instability threatens Romania’s fiscal credibility and could increase the risk of a sovereign-rating downgrade. The PSD leader emphasized that about a month ago, the agency had announced that it was maintaining Romania’s rating, and distinguished between Fitch’s official position and the analyst’s statements.

“PSD will request an official position on whether it has changed its position over the past month, as well as on this analyst’s statements and the extent to which he was speaking on behalf of the agency,” Grindeanu said on Antena 3.

He also said that he would ask the party’s legal team to analyze whether the information disseminated had caused damage and whether civil or even criminal liability could be established. Grindeanu accused such statements of potentially harming Romania and called for disinformation not to be used in political battles.

According to the analyst cited, the Government’s ability to continue reducing the budget deficit and present a credible budget for next year will be essential to assessing the country’s creditworthiness. Fitch has scheduled its next assessment of Romania’s rating for January 2027.
