Dominic Fritz, the president of USR, warned that the amendment proposed by PSD to the new integrity law could severely affect the funds from PNRR, estimating a loss of nearly 800 million euros. The amendment introduces a retroactive sanction for acts of incompatibility and conflict of interest, requiring the termination of the mandate within 30 days for those affected.
Fritz believes that this measure is clearly directed against him and that it is unconstitutional, highlighting the absurdity of applying a sanction six years after the alleged act. He announced that he would challenge the law in the Constitutional Court, warning that its adoption could turn Romania into a "banana republic".
The amendment, supported by PSD senator Ion Cristinel Rujan and other members from PNL and AUR, provides for the termination of the position for individuals found in conflict of interest before the law comes into force. This situation was amplified by a recent decision of the ICCJ which confirmed Fritz's conflict of interest, generating significant political scandal.
