At least a year after the moderate president of Romania, Nicușor Dan, took power following a tense confrontation with the far right, he is facing the most serious challenge so far - the attempt to mediate an agreement between rival parties to form a stable government, POLITICO reported on Thursday evening.

The last coalition in Romania collapsed in April, and Dan's first two proposals for the position of prime minister failed to gain enough support from the parties to lead to a new administration. He now has one last chance to propose a new prime minister and secure the candidate's approval through a parliamentary vote, before the option of early elections comes into play.

Discussions among political parties in Romania to reach an agreement on forming a minority government continued on Thursday, but ended after two hours without an agreement being announced.

Nicușor Dan is set to meet again with party leaders on Friday, but he will not propose a new prime minister unless they reach an agreement on supporting a minority government.
