I remind you that between 2015-2019, during Trump's first term (I was in Washington DC covering American domestic politics at our embassy), a country like Japan, with mega global companies present in the American market, with over 300 diplomats in DC (we boasted about having around 12 diplomats), had concluded, directly through their embassy in the US or through other Japanese public agencies, dozens, I emphasize, dozens of lobbying contracts to understand what was happening and to promote their national interests in Donald Trump's America.
At that time, Romania had not concluded any (zero lobbying contracts), although they would have been very useful! Hungary also had a few, although Orban was already a close friend of Trump back then. It was achieved then, mainly through the efforts of the ambassador, our diplomats, and some (non-political) institutions from Romania, very credible to American officials in the security-intelligence area, the organization of a historic visit to Washington, right on the White House lawn, of our then president.
Times have changed and become more complicated for us. We would have liked to have the support ensured by legally regulated lobbying activities in the US back then. It is good, however, that we have one now! Moralistic aberrations really have no place here. The insecurity of the country caused by a potential severe cooling of relations with the US during this critical period would be far too costly for our freedom, prosperity, and security, for all of us. Including for the ideologists of the nation.
