Since the beginning of the war in Ukraine, over 26,000 Ukrainians have illegally entered Romania, mostly through the mountainous area of Maramureș. Authorities have identified cases where those who obtained temporary protection became guides for other compatriots, being arrested for human trafficking. The Maramureș Mountains present significant risks, with 29 Ukrainians having died while attempting to cross the border. Rescue operations are difficult, and many are unaware of the dangers.
