A recent DNA analysis revealed that a group of people from the extreme south of the Peloponnese peninsula has been genetically isolated for over a millennium. The study conducted by the University of Oxford on the "southern maniots" demonstrates that this population has functioned as an isolated "genetic island," preserving the demographic profile of ancient and Roman Greece intact, unlike the rest of the continent which has been genetically altered by the migrating Slavic and Germanic waves from 300-700 AD. DNA analyses revealed a strictly patriarchal social structure and a strong "founder effect" arising from geographical isolation, with over 50% of current men having a common ancestor from the 7th century, while the greater diversity of maternal lines suggests that men remained locally rooted, accepting only a limited integration of women from external communities.

The study emphasizes the importance of preserving genetic diversity and the cultural history of the region, providing a window into how populations have evolved and adapted over time. The findings may contribute to a better understanding of migrations and interactions between different human groups in the past.
