The new leadership of NASA, led by Jared Isaacman, has announced the suspension of plans for the Lunar Gateway space station and the redirecting of resources towards the construction of a permanent base on the Moon's surface, with an estimated budget of 20 billion dollars over the next seven years. Isaacman emphasized that the agency's main objective is to establish a lasting human presence on the Moon, not just to carry out temporary missions. Although part of the Gateway infrastructure is already built, adapting it for use on the Moon will present significant technical challenges.

The decision comes in a geopolitical context in which China is accelerating its space program, aiming for a crewed lunar landing by 2030. The new lunar base will support scientific missions and the testing of technologies for future flights to Mars, thereby strengthening the United States' position in the global competition for space exploration.
