Mistral, a French company founded in 2023 by former researchers from DeepMind and Meta, has launched a new suite of AI language models, including Mistral Large 3, considered one of the most advanced multimodal and multilingual models. It can be used in most European languages and in some Asian languages. Mistral also promotes the models as efficient and open alternatives to American platforms like ChatGPT, Gemini, and Claude. The company has also announced a smaller model intended for use in robotics, healthcare, and drones, which can operate offline and gives users control over their data. The launch comes amid concerns that Europe remains behind in AI development, compared to competitors in the US and China. Mistral was recently valued at 14 billion dollars, after ASML invested 1.3 billion euros in the company.
