Instagram, the social networking platform owned by Meta, will officially abandon the encryption of private messages starting May 8, 2026. This decision comes after years of criticism from law enforcement and child safety groups, which have challenged its functionality. Meta announced that end-to-end encryption technology will no longer be available for direct messages, thus allowing the company to access the content of users' messages. A spokesperson for Meta explained that the low adoption rate of encryption was the main reason for this decision, noting that users can continue to use encryption on WhatsApp. The implementation of end-to-end encryption on Meta's platforms began in 2023, but it has faced criticism from authorities who argue that it could compromise the online safety of children.
