Artificial intelligence (AI) opens new opportunities for businesses, but it also brings significant risks to privacy. A recent study showed that large language models, such as those used by ChatGPT, can help hackers identify anonymous users on social media. Researchers Simon Lermen and Daniel Paleka demonstrated that AI can connect anonymous accounts with real identities by analyzing public information and searching for similar patterns online. For example, an anonymous user posting about school issues and their dog could reveal enough clues to be identified by an AI system. This capability raises concerns related to privacy and cybersecurity. Governments could use these tools to monitor activities, and cybercriminals could create customized scams. Although AI can improve data analysis, it is not infallible; models can make incorrect associations, leading to false accusations. Additionally, AI can combine information from various public sources, including hospital data, which can compromise anonymity. Researchers suggest measures for platforms, such as limiting rapid data downloads and detecting automated data extraction activities. In an AI-driven world, users need to be more cautious with the personal information they share online. Protecting anonymity becomes a challenge, requiring a deeper understanding of how seemingly innocuous details can be correlated on the internet.
