The President of Ukraine, Volodymyr Zelensky, has nominated Evhen Hmara as the new Minister of Defense and Andrii Sibiha to officially return to the position of Minister of Foreign Affairs, after he held the position on an interim basis.
The decision comes following the dismissal of the former Minister of Defense, Mykhailo Fedorov, which sparked nationwide protests. The nominations must be approved by parliament, which resumed its activities on August 18. Protesters continue to demand the reinstatement of Fedorov, who is appreciated for his reforms. Hmara, a veteran of the SBU, coordinated drone attack campaigns and led significant operations, having extensive experience in advanced technologies.
Although Zelensky rejected the reinstatement of Fedorov, he accepted the protesters' request to dismiss the commander-in-chief Oleksandr Syrski. Fedorov's future remains uncertain, as he wishes to return only to the position of Minister of Defense.
