On the night of December 3 to 4, 2024, Yoon Suk Yeol attempted to impose martial law, sending the army to block the opposition-dominated parliament. However, a sufficient number of deputies gathered to vote to annul the decree, thus preventing this coup d'état.
The Supreme Court recently upheld the increased sentence of 7 years in prison, established by the High Court of Seoul, which found him guilty of document forgery and failing to comply with the legal process necessary for the imposition of martial law.
Yoon was also accused of spreading false information to foreign media.
His lawyers intend to challenge the constitutionality of the decision. Yoon, at the age of 65, has been in detention since July 2025 and is being tried in another seven cases, including for orchestrating an insurrection.
