South Korean President Lee Jae Myung called for reducing military tensions and resuming dialogue with North Korea in a speech delivered on Armed Forces Day, amid a new dispute over compliance with the armistice in the Demilitarized Zone.
The leader in Seoul said that his administration would pursue practical measures to restore trust between the two Koreas and reduce the risk of confrontations. The appeal comes after an anti-personnel mine exploded, injuring three South Korean soldiers.
South Korea determined that the mine most likely came from a batch planted by North Korea on the southern side of the Military Demarcation Line. A joint investigation by the South Korean military and the United Nations Command subsequently identified another active North Korean mine in the same area.
Kim Yo Jong, the sister of North Korean leader Kim Jong Un, rejected the accusations and claimed that the investigation's findings had been fabricated, warning of a possible retaliation.
