South Korea officially proposed on Friday that North Korea hold military talks to mutually confirm the exact route of the Military Demarcation Line inside the Demilitarized Zone (DMZ). Seoul also seeks to restore communication lines between the two militaries and prevent accidental clashes in the border area.
South Korea’s Defense Ministry said details regarding the dates and locations could be discussed through Panmunjom, the only point of direct contact between the two states inside the DMZ. Deputy Defense Minister Kim Hong-cheol said the negotiations could also include the United Nations Command and expressed hope that the initiative would produce a positive outcome.
The proposal comes after a series of serious incidents. At the end of September, the explosion of a North Korean mine in the DMZ injured three South Korean soldiers, an incident the UN Command described as a violation of the armistice. In recent months, the South Korean military has fired warning shots dozens of times after reporting incursions by North Korean soldiers south of the demarcation line.
The initiative comes amid a shift in Seoul’s policy following Lee Jae Myung’s assumption of the presidency in 2025. South Korea halted propaganda broadcasts and began dismantling loudspeakers at the border, measures followed by the suspension of North Korean broadcasts. Bilateral relations nevertheless remain tense, with Pyongyang describing the South as its main enemy.
