Chinese President Xi Jinping conveyed to his American counterpart, Donald Trump, on Thursday that a mismanagement of the Taiwan issue could lead to a conflict between China and the United States.
China considers Taiwan a province of its own and advocates for a peaceful reunification, but does not rule out the use of force. Although the U.S. does not have diplomatic relations with Taipei, it is the main arms supplier to the island, which stirs discontent in Beijing. Xi emphasized that the Taiwan issue is crucial in Sino-American relations, stating that proper management can maintain stability, while a wrong approach could lead to clashes. He warned that Taiwanese separatism is incompatible with peace in the Taiwan Strait. In contrast, the Taiwanese government stated that the U.S. has reaffirmed its strong support for the island during the meeting between Trump and Xi.
