Wole Soyinka, Nigerian writer and Nobel Prize laureate in Literature, announced that his visa for the United States has been revoked, and his entry into the country has been denied. The decision may be related to his recent criticisms of former President Donald Trump. At the age of 91, Soyinka stated that he was summoned to the U.S. consulate to bring his passport, where he was informed of the visa cancellation for unspecified reasons. He described the invitation to bring his passport as a "strange love letter."

Soyinka renounced his permanent residency in the U.S. in 2016, in protest against Trump's election, and has repeatedly criticized his immigration policies. Recently, he compared Trump's leadership style to that of Ugandan dictator Idi Amin, a statement that may have influenced the decision of American authorities. The U.S. Embassy in Nigeria declined to comment on his case. Additionally, in June, Soyinka attended the Sibiu International Theatre Festival, where he had an unpleasant experience with a taxi driver who tried to cheat him.
