Will Lewis, the editor and CEO of The Washington Post, has resigned from his position, just a few days after the publication announced the layoff of approximately one third of its staff, including hundreds of journalists.

The decision was confirmed by the newspaper, which announced that Jeff D'Onofrio will take over the roles of editor and interim CEO.

In his farewell message, Lewis mentioned that his departure comes after two years of transformation and that he made difficult decisions to ensure the future of the publication.

Jeff Bezos, the owner of the newspaper, described the leadership change as an opportunity for the publication.

Lewis's resignation comes amid tensions in the newsroom, heightened by the recent layoffs, and the employees' union welcomed his departure, calling for the layoffs to be rescinded.

Lewis was appointed in 2023 and his tenure was marked by financial losses and controversies.
