Since August 24, members of the Washington DC National Guard, deployed at the order of President Donald Trump, have been allowed to carry firearms, a measure considered exceptional. Trump has said the city is under threat from violent gangs, while Mayor Muriel Bowser points out that the crime rate has dropped significantly in the past two years. Since the arrival of the troops, troop numbers have increased, and Trump has hinted at the possibility of deploying troops to other Democratic-ruled states.
