United States President Donald Trump has approved the execution by firing squad of Nidal Malik Hasan, who was convicted of the 2009 shooting at the Fort Hood military base in Texas. The decision was announced Monday by Sean Parnell, a Pentagon spokesperson.
Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth recommended the execution, and the president approved it. The Secretary of the Army is to determine the date and location of the execution. According to U.S. authorities, Hasan killed 13 people and wounded 32 others during the attack.
The massacre took place on November 5, 2009, at a medical center at Fort Hood. Hasan, a former military psychiatrist, opened fire on soldiers while shouting “Allahu Akbar.” He reportedly sought to prevent troops from being sent to the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq, which he considered illegal.
Hasan, a Muslim born in the United States of Palestinian descent, was sentenced to death by a military tribunal in 2013. His execution would be the first carried out by the U.S. military since 1961. The condemned man was wounded during the attack and remains partially paralyzed.
