The Pentagon announced that the execution of Nidal Hasan, who was sentenced for killing 13 people at the Fort Hood military base in 2009, will be broadcast live on December 3 from the same base in Texas. Hasan is set to be executed by firing squad, on the recommendation of Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth and with the approval of President Donald Trump.
The decision would mark a first for the United States, where no legal execution is known to have been broadcast on television or online. Hasan, a former Army psychiatrist, opened fire in a medical facility at Fort Hood, killing 13 people and wounding dozens more. A military jury sentenced him to death in August 2013 after finding him guilty on 45 counts of premeditated murder and attempted premeditated murder.
The execution would be the first by firing squad carried out by the U.S. military since 1945 and the first military execution since 1961. The plan comes amid debates over capital punishment and difficulties encountered in administering lethal injections. Military law specialists and organizations opposed to the death penalty have criticized the public nature of the broadcast.
