Johann Wadephul, a German dignitary, emphasized the necessity of abolishing the principle of unanimity in the foreign and security policy of the European Union, in the context of the dispute with Hungary regarding an important loan for Ukraine.

Wadephul stated that this change would allow the EU to act more effectively on the international stage, especially in support of Ukraine and in the implementation of sanctions against Russia. He advocates for the adoption of the principle of qualified majority for decisions in the EU Council, which would require the vote of at least 55% of the member states, representing 65% of the total population of the Union.

Currently, unanimity is required on sensitive issues, such as common foreign and security policy, the enlargement of the Union, and the EU budget, which allows each member state to have a veto right. Wadephul believes that recent experiences show that such a reform is essential for the efficiency of the actions of the European Union.
