Tens of thousands of people are expected on the streets of Paris on Tuesday, where French trade unions are joining high school students’ protests for better conditions in schools. The demonstrations, which have spread throughout the country, have been accompanied by clashes with police, injuries, and numerous arrests.
According to the authorities, activity was disrupted in 589 of the approximately 3,700 high schools in France and at 32 universities. Up to 40,000 protesters are expected in Paris, while the government has called for the demonstrations to remain peaceful and take place within the bounds of the law.
The French Ministry of Justice announced that 5,060 people have been detained since the protests began, including 4,406 minors. In total, 1,803 people are facing prosecution. The authorities denounce violence against law enforcement officers and education workers, as well as material damage amounting to millions of euros.
