The White House warned Israel that a military offensive in the Gaza Strip town of Rafah without proper planning would be a "disaster".

The warning comes after Israel's leader said the army had been ordered to prepare to operate in Rafah. The comments come as more than half of Gaza's residents are now living in Rafah under dire humanitarian conditions. Israel has launched aerial bombardments on parts of Rafah and Israeli tanks have opened fire.
