After a 15-year hiatus, the US has reportedly resumed placing nuclear weapons in the UK to underline its commitment to Europe's security. The recent flight of a US military plane to the Lakenheath base suggests the transport of B61-12 nuclear bombs, a modernized type of weapon. The move, not officially confirmed, could give Europe greater flexibility in its nuclear response and reinforces deterrence against Russia. Britain has also acquired nuclear-capable F-35A jets, which could involve the British Air Force in NATO nuclear missions.
